This Machine was Bradbury's equivalent of Singers Model 48 which it predates by a number of years.
It was a development of the Letter 'S' Family No. 1
so much so that the Manuals are virtually identical, initially the Company didn't even bother to alter
the illustration of the machine on the cover!
The High Arm Family Machine was designed purely for domestic use and was not produced
as a Medium machine.
Although it was available as a treadle it appears to primarily have been produced as a hand
crank to be used in combination with a separate treadle stand.
These stands were available with 5 different designs of cabinet work and ranged in price
from £6 4s 0d for the hand machine and stand with one drawer to £7 14s 0d for the hand
machine with stand five drawers and leaf.
It was also available as a drop head and in a three quarter cabinet.
The earlier version of the High Arm Family Machine has slightly different decals and has a catch which must be released before access can be gained to the underneath of the machine, the casting to attach the hand crank mechanism to the head has a curved bottom.
Very little advertising material has been found about this machine even though it was made in substantial numbers and any additional material would be most appreciated please email us
